Missing Since: 17th April 1995
Marcus Rigby was 27 years old when he went missing from his hometown of Grange-over-Sands near Cartmel in Cumbria. He is often known to family and friends as Marc.
Marc left his hometown after meeting with his mother and telling her he was heading towards the West Country. Marc hitchhiked towards London and contacted his aunt late one evening from the services at South Mimms, on the M25/A1 interchange. He stayed with them before being dropped off dropped off at the Tesco's on Marcham Rd Interchange – in Abingdon – on Junction A34 and A415 in Oxfordshire, where he said he was hitch hiking to Weymouth.
It is believed Marc stayed in a street named Artist Row, verified by a cheque made out to a BnB in Marcus’ handwriting. The cheque was refused by the bank, and it was sent back to his mother’s home, as Marcus was still registered as living there. The area is well known for people seeking casual labour which Marc was used to doing.
What we know
At the time he went missing, Marcus was described as 5ft 11” tall and of slim build, with hazel eyes and brown hair. He would now be in his mid-50s. Marcus’ sister Sam, describes him as extremely kind, lots of fun, light-hearted and someone who loves a good joke.
Over the years, there have been many sightings of Marcus in the Weymouth area, including several possible sightings in the wake of a 2007 appeal that his mum conducted through Missing Live.
Marcus’ family want to remain respectful of his autonomy and his choices and understand that he may wish not to return to the family. However, the family desperately want to hear from Marcus, even just to let them know he is okay, with no pressure for anything more.
A message from Marcus’ family:
“What we want Marc to know is, that one, we won’t give up looking for him. We want him to know that we miss him, and we love him, really, so much. And whatever he feels that he needed to start afresh from, that we’re always here for him, we’re desperate to see him. There is a home here for him if he wants one. We don’t want him to think that as, even if his mind has changed as time has gone by, ‘Oh I couldn’t go back as too much time has gone by’, that’s not the case. We want him to know that we are still here and still looking for him. Even after all this time”

Marcus Rigby - or Marc to his loved ones - disappeared in April 1995, aged 27, after saying he was ‘going away’ and would ‘phone in a week.’ It was a call that has never been made to his family, who were living in Grange-over-Sands at the time of his disappearance. After 27 years, Marc’s family are still full of hope for his reunion with them.
There is always hope, and you could be the person that makes the difference.
