From the Unknown to the Known: Vincent’s Story

A young man was found in an open cupboard on Bury Walk in Kensington, London in 1994.

Reports said he had the appearance of a semi-vagrant. Despite efforts by the police and the UK Missing Persons Unit, he remained unidentified.

Name in the Notebook

What we knew:

  • A red notebook bearing the name "Vincent AKPPROROFF" was found, though the handwriting was unclear

  • Appeals and research seemed to focus solely on one spelling

  • Research into possible misspellings had not been done, and genealogy had not been explored due to resourcing challenges

Our Investigative Approach and Successful Identification

In this case, we applied a comprehensive approach combining advanced genealogical research with OSINT (Open Source Intelligence) specialist searches to explore all possible leads. By constructing and analysing extended family trees, we were able to identify potential matches with a high degree of confidence.

We also commissioned a renewed living depiction using the latest facial reconstruction technology to support visual identification efforts. Our search led us to potential surviving family members overseas, with whom we were able to establish contact. Ultimately, our combined efforts resulted in a confirmed identity match, bringing long-awaited answers to those affected.

The Outcome and Impact

Through our research, we discovered that Vincent’s family had been unaware of his passing, having lost contact with his branch of the family many years ago.

This case underscored the challenges that limited resources can pose in missing persons investigations—delaying potential identification and resolution. Thanks to the renewed efforts and eventual confirmation, Vincent’s family now has the opportunity to honour his memory and find closure after years of uncertainty.
