What Does Success Look Like? A Message to all Locate International Volunteers

At Locate International, the outcomes we seek will always matter deeply: finding a missing person, helping identify someone who has remained unknown, and bringing long-awaited answers to families.

But our work also has an impact that cannot always be captured in a headline or a final outcome.

Following a recent conversation with a family we are supporting, I reflected on what success can mean when a case remains unresolved. What began as a message to our volunteer team, recognising the care, skill and commitment they bring to every case, I have chosen to share this message more widely because it speaks to the heart of Locate’s work: that no family should feel their loved one has been forgotten.

I get asked this question quite a lot.

What does success look like at Locate International?

For many people, the answer seems obvious. It's finding someone who has been missing for years. It's helping identify the unidentified. It's giving a family the phone call they've waited decades to receive.

Those moments are extraordinary. They are why we do what we do.

But they're not the whole story.

The truth is, the cases that come to Locate aren't easy. If they were, they would already have been solved. We are asked to help with the cases that have exhausted obvious lines of enquiry, where time has passed, evidence has faded, and families have often lived with unanswered questions for years.

Success has to mean something bigger than a headline.

I was reminded of that after speaking with a family recently.

They said something that has stayed with me.

Success, to them, wasn't just about finding their loved one.

Success was knowing that people they had never met cared enough to give up their own time, knowledge and expertise to help.

Success was knowing that their loved one hadn't been forgotten.

Success was having the reassurance that the investigation had been looked at properly, professionally, and that every reasonable opportunity had been explored.

Success was someone standing alongside them and adding value, however big or however small.

That conversation reminded me what Locate really is.

We are more than investigators. We are volunteers who choose to show up. People who refuse to let difficult cases simply gather dust. People who bring fresh thinking, professional curiosity and compassion to families who deserve answers.

So if you've ever finished reviewing a case and wondered whether you'd made enough difference because there wasn't a dramatic breakthrough, I want you to know this.

You already did.

Every timeline you build.

Every record you review.

Every map you examine.

Every question you ask.

Every hour you freely give.

It matters.

Because success isn't measured only by the cases we solve. It's measured by the hope we restore, the confidence we give families, and the knowledge that someone still cares enough to keep looking.

That's what success looks like to me.

Thank you for continuing to show up.

Why this matters

The work of Locate’s volunteers reaches far beyond the individual tasks involved in a case review. It gives families the reassurance that experienced, compassionate people are still applying their knowledge, asking questions and looking carefully at every reasonable avenue.

We will continue to support long-term missing and unidentified person cases with professionalism, curiosity and humanity - because every person matters, and every family deserves to know that someone is still looking.

The people named above represent the team of volunteers at Locate International who have kindly consented to be included. Some investigate, some research, some analyse data, some support families, some tell stories, some organise, some design, and some quietly hold everything together. Each contribution is different, but each one contributes to success. There are many more volunteers, organisations, and individuals who support our work, and I am deeply grateful to everyone who contributes their time, skills and care.
